The experimental results from the WB8ELK balloon flight strongly confirm the 70 cm AM televisioncalculations in the proposal. The results also provide additional insight into the usability of a70 cm television link with the shuttle. In the proposal, we recommended a minimum of 10 Watts ofvideo from the shuttle. This higher power level coupled with the lower antenna temperaturesexpected from an elevated antenna, assures good to excellent pictures from the shuttle at closeranges. In the worst case (using 10 Watts) when the shuttle is at the extreme range and near thehorizon, the quality of the pictures would be very similar to the included figures. Uplink groundstations using 100 to 1SOO watts can easily provide good to excellent pictures to the shuttle over anentire pass.
