The Philippines, being a disaster-prone country, relies on datasets from satellites for a multitude ofremote-sensing applications. In response, its Department of Science and Technology (DOST) supportedthe Development of Philippine Scientific Earth Observation Microsatellite (PHL-MICROSAT) programwith the aim to build, test and launch the Philippines’ first earth observation satellite while developingcapacity through deep, intensive study leading to the actual development of important satellitetechnologies. One of the paths that a team of students, instructors and engineers at the University ofthe Philippines (UP) Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI) have taken is thedevelopment of nanosatellites and the formation of AMSAT-PHL. This paper describes some of theaccomplishments of the team in the development of its own amateur satellite ground station and theroadmap for its nanosatellite development.
