The ever present infrastructure elements for LRT and tram in urban areas, like tracks and overhead systems have a strong influence on the perceived image and quality of any cityscape. Different attitudes towards the visual appearance of the infrastructure elements can "make or break" urban spaces. Without doubt France seems to be on the cutting edge of design - the "renaissance of LRT" is quite spectacular with more than 200 km of new tram lines that have re-qualified almost all major conurbations. Traditionally Germany is a "traditional tram country" with more than 2700 km of existing and new tram lines - although the perceived public image is more closely tied to up-market cars. Maybe this is also due to the fact that the design quality of tram infrastructures in many cases is somewhat challenged. It is amazing how the state of the art for technical solutions may differ from one country to another. This essay shall focus on some of these aspects and portray on technical aspects of design challenges. It shows experiences from projects in Germany and extensive research, mainly in Germany, France and Switzerland, while preparing the mentioned dissertation thesis.
