It has been said before that "there are two types of veterinary surgeons who never have surgical complications: those who don't operate and those who aren't quite truthful. This is a lighthearted way to emphasize a serious clinical problem—surgical complications. Regardless of experience level, all surgeons encounter complications both in the operating room and during the post-operative period. It is important that we are able to critically evaluate these issues when they occur, learn from them, and work to minimize the risk of future occurrences. It is equally important that we continue to educate ourselves on how surgical errors arise and complications occur in an effort to improve our surgical care and maximize patient outcomes.
