The skin over the lateral thigh is relatively adherent to the underlying biceps femoris muscle. This can negatively affect the survival of skin in this region, if undermined as a flap. Skin on the remaining portion of the extremity is relatively loose and can be utilized to create skin flaps. Wounds over the stifle are susceptible to dehiscence due to excessive movement. Special attention to lines of skin tension is a must over areas of significant movement.
