Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of notorious pathogens often reported for its pathogenicity associated with some hospital-acquired infections. To acquire iron sources as indispensable nutrient for living organisms, P. aeruginosa has developed heme acquisition system (Has). Under iron-limiting conditions, P. aeruginosa secretes the extracellular heme acquisition protein (HasA) to pirate heme from hosts. The heme captured by HasA is then transported to a HasA-specific outer membrane receptor called HasR (Fig. 1a).
