The wound field synchronous motor (WFSM), which achieves high-efficiency driving with its variable flux function, is expected to be adopted as the traction motor for vehicles. This study verifies the superiority of the WFSM through comparison with the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), which has been conventionally used. The results of evaluating the maximum torque and efficiency through a study using a simple magnetic circuit and finite element analysis (FEA) have shown the use of the WFSM improves efficiency in the medium- and high-speed low-torque region although the torque density lowers by a small percent.
