Kelp bass, Paralabrax clathratus (Serranidae), are one of the most frequently caught sport fish in southern California. Kelp bass stocks may be best protected and replenished through the use of marine protected areas (MPA), and energetic models may provide the best alternative for quantifying optimal population densities of kelp bass within MPAs. Daily energy demands were quantified for kelp bass (recruits, juveniles, and adults) by measuring standard and routine oxygen consumption (VO2) in a static respirometer. Minimum and average energy demands for kelp bass of were applied to 2 theoretical populations: 1 inside a marine reserve protected from fishing pressure, and 1 outside a marine reserve, exposed to fishing pressure. Both populations were given identical abundances, however, there was a higher abundance of larger fish inside the marine reserve. There was no significant difference in standard VO2 between day and night for kelp bass. Spontaneous activity in the respirometer increased VO2 28% above standard VO 2. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
