Two days before Christmas 2002, the US Department of Defense published its Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Roadmap 2002-2027, a detailed attempt to define tri-service plans for UAV development and procurement over the next 25 years. One year on, Kenneth Munson looks at the major residual, current and near-term US programmes. Given the great strides in unmanned air vehicle (UAV) development and deployment since the 1990 Gulf War, it is a bold man who would put his name to an outline of the perceived future needs in this area over a time-span of twice that length. The Department of Defense's (DoD's) previous UAV Roadmap, published as recently as 2000, was rapidly overtaken by events and it is a racing certainty that a similar fate awaits the present one. Already some slip roads and intersections have been added to this new 'M25', not least due to continuing input from Operations Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Iraqi Freedom (OIF). That said, the current US inventory of UAVs is both ageing and depleted - even the high-profile Predator is now almost ten years old. Already more than half have been lost and a game plan for the future remains essential. The Roadmap is an outline of objectives, rather than a necessarily finite list of the air vehicles and subsystems that will actually achieve them, but the overriding goal is to improve the speed, efficiency and reliability of 'sensor-to-shooter' capabilities.
