The study of the dynamics of flows (or ordinary differential equations) on n-dimensional manifolds follows closely the one of the diffeomorphisms on (n — 1)-dimensional manifolds: this idea was introduced by Poincare at the end of the 19th century when he considered the first return map of a vector field on a transverse cross section for studying the dynamical properties of the flow.
