Nature recycles virtually everything. In the great ecological cycle of producers, consumers, scavengers and decomposers, little goes to waste. Nutrients build living bodies and are then liberated to take their part in a new cycle of life, but human intervention has broken that cycle. Fisheries and farming take vast amounts of nutrient from the oceans and the land. Sent as food to the cities, it turns eventually to colossal quantities of waste; a source of potential pollution rather than the building blocks of new life.
