Attempts had been made to use sulphur-oxidizing microorganisms together with elemental sulphur to render many plant nutrients in soil in an available form for plant absorption and hence to substitute costly chemical fertilizer. This study compares between the efficiency of a Streptomyces Venezuelae mutant (SVM) and Thiobacillus thiooxidans (SOB) in oxidizing elemental sulphur in soil and the further consequences on squasli growth and yield in a pot experiment. Pronounced differences were distinguishable in the efficacy of tested strains in oxidizing sulphur and on pH values by either SVM or SOB in vitro as well as in increasing squash growth and yield. Sole biofertilization with SVM or SOB significantly increased the growth of squash and raised their nutrient contents. However, dual biofertilization with SOB and SVM was superior to sole biofertilization.
