The large theoretical propositions of Roy Ascott's technoetic theory, with its focus on the juncturc between art, technology and mind, can be misunderstood and stigmatized as difficult because these ideas attempt to stylistically reflect inexhaustible variety. "Ecstatic Ascott" addresses a narrower emphasis: what the author sees as a phantasmagoric theme within the technoetic. Based on Ascott's stressing of simultaneous states of being numinous and grounded, the author places one of Ascott's early paintings, and then his more general theory of art, within a divinational phantasmagoric tradition that depends upon figure/ground amalgamation.
