The Royal Navy (RN) has been conducting international training for many decades in one form or another; however, the term 'international defence training' (IDT) is a relatively recent term used to describe the single service focal points that serve to facilitate the delivery of training for all international customers, hence IDT(RN) is matched by similar 'hubs' within the army, RAF and Land Warfare Centre.Following SDSR, the roles and benefits of international training in support of the defence and wider comprehensive engagement agenda is becoming increasingly recognised and formalised in policy; the widespread incorporation of IDT as a lever of influence and diplomacy within the forthcoming Defence Engagement Strategy, a joint strategy between the MoD and FCO to be released later this year, encapsulates this shift and reflects its significant role within Military Task 5 - defence contribution to UK influence.
