摘要

Since the regulations for animal experimentation were amended by the Japanese government, many universities and research institutes have established or are on the way to establishing their own regulations. These regulations are derived from the 3 Rs conception of Russell and Burch; however, few people have the opportunity to study the ethics of animal experimentation. Therefore, we have included the subject as part of this symposium. 'Ethics' describes the moral philosophy of human relationships; however, in terms of animal experimentation, the relationship is between laboratory animals and people, including biomedical researchers and the managers or technicians charged with rearing and managing the animals. Those people that conduct animal research should consider the ethics of handling laboratory animals, and they should consider the emotional conflict that comes with sacrificing animals.
