The jury may still be out as far as the bright boys in the City are concerned, but Smiths Group sees itself as firmly belonging to the former category. CEO Keith Butler-Wheelhouse points to market-leading businesses with major growth prospects in its four chosen areas of specialisation, of which Aerospace is the largest. Group turnover in 2003 was £3.06 billion, down 5% on the previous year, while operating profit was £423.8 million, down 9%. £426.9 million of the turnover came from now-discontinued operations, which contributed £51.9 million to the profit bottom line. After tax return on average shareholder investment was 11.9%. Earnings per share were 50.1p, while dividends were up for the fifth consecutive year to 26p.
