摘要

The Intermittent Bus Lane (IBL) concept is an innovative approach to achieve bus priority. It consists of a road lane in which the status of each section changes according to the presence or not of a bus in its spatial domain: when a bus is approaching an IBL, the status of that lane is changed to BUS lane, and after the bus moves out, it becomes open to general traffic again. A real world demonstration of the theory was carried out as a prototype in Lisbon under a protocol between the University (where the concept was developed1), the Municipality and the urban bus operator (CARRIS). This article describes the six-month demonstration that began in September 2005. The results obtained show an average increase of about 20% in bus commercial speed, with peak hour gains in the order of 50%, and with a very limited impact on general traffic movements.
