Dry matter partitioning relative to development in high yielding Indian potato cultivars under short day tropical conditions.

A field experiment was conducted during 2003-04, in Jalandhar, Punjab, India, to evaluate dry matter partitioning in relation to the growth and development of high-yielding potato cultivars grown under short-day tropical conditions. Test cultivars included the early maturing Kufri Ashoka, medium maturing Kufri Giriraj, Kufri Pukhraj, Kufri Sherpa and Kufri Lauvkar, and the late maturing Kufri Sindhuri. Similar dry matter partitioning in early, medium and late maturing cultivars showed that studying dry matter partitioning relative to developmental stages would be more suitable for modelling growth and yield of potato. When the reference point used was tuber initiation, there were hardly any differences between cultivars, even when they are of different maturity groups. Thus, dry matter partitioning relative to tuber initiation stage might be adopted as an average value after calibration and adjustment for modelling growth and yield of Indian potato cultivars without much error.
