The principal cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum, has four copies (homologues) of each of 12 unique chromosomes (2w=4x=48) and hence is a tetraploid which displays tetrasomic inheritance. Whilst it is not simply an autotetraploid of the cultivated diploid species S. stenotomum, it now seems reasonable to treat it as an autotetraploid species in genetical studies.
