摘要

Regional anesthesia in children was reported over a century ago when the use of spinal anesthesia was introduced. However, with the advent of safer methods for general anesthesia, there has been a decrease in its use over the last three decades. With the advent of day-surgery and the need for fast-tracking children after major surgery, the need for nonopioid-based recovery of children has become imperative. The resurgence in regional anesthetic techniques in children is in part due to the advancements in technique and also the modalities for their use in children. The old adage of not providing regional anesthesia in anesthetized children as an "escapism" from the burden of providing adequate care has been overshadowed by outcome research on the benefits of regional techniques in children compared with the usual opioid administration.1 Regional anesthesia in children is here to stay. As the practice of anesthesia specializes in the regionalists versus the nonregionalists, we come to crossroads where there are some peripheral nerve blocks in children that can be performed on an everyday basis with just some forethought.
