摘要

Descanso Gardens is famous for its camellia collection established mainly by the newspaper publisher and horticultural entrepreneur Mr. Manchester E. Boddy back in the 1940s. At present, an estimated number of 30,000 camellia plants with approximately650 camellia taxa (mostly cultivars of Camellia japonica) are growing in the 20 acres of the garden property under the canopy of coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia). Over the decades, after the garden ownership was transferred to the county of Los Angeles and placed under the management of its park service, the camellias have been allowed to grow freely, partly due to a change of nature in the camellia planting from a plantation type to a park setting. Naturally, as a result of high planting density and competition for light and space, many of the camellias are not in good health. Over-crowding condition has caused many camellias to become weak and lanky and has negatively affected their flowering performance.
