Terry Mabbett takes a look at the cultural and natural history of our two very different chestnut species. The United Kingdom is blessed with two chestnuts, sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) and horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastamum). Both are introduced, unrelated and of limited interest to timber and woodworking industries. That said, chestnuts are elegant trees in both summer and winter condition. What's more they could be the saviour of our woodlands, parks and gardens.
