摘要

Surgery and anaesthesia induce a complex stress response including metabolic, immunological and neuroendocrine changes (Desborough 2000). Stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system promotes the release of cortisol, aldosterone and catecholamines from the adrenal glands. Corticosteroids have permissive effects upon the actions of catecholamines, in particular the catecholamine ?induced vasopressor responses (Ullian 1999). Patients with adrenal gland dysfunction may not be able to produce sufcient steroids in response to stressors and are therefore at increased risk of vascular collapse.
