Speaking to C&CI in early December, Holger Preibisch, Managing Director of the Kaffeeverband (German Coffee Association), said consumption in Germany was "broadly flat" but the single portion market was continuing to grow. "Demand for capsules continues to grow, whereas in the past demand for pods was driving demand," he explained. Mr Preibisch said the market for capsules had been dominated by 3-4 well-known companies and noted that Mondelez had recently developed its own machine for Nespresso capsules. More recently, however, the well-known supermarket chain Aldi had also introduced a new coffee capsule system, Espressi (having first come to the market with a similar system, K-Fee, a couple of years ago). "We don't anticipate that there will be that much more growth in pods," said Mr Preibisch. "Companies are shifting their attention to capsules because that is where the growth is now. It's a life style and quality choice for consumers."
