The flowering behaviour and fruiting pattern of some early maturing germplasm lines of Egyptian cotton (G.barbadense, L.) was studied during the course of morphological characterizationfor use in crop improvement programmes. The results revealed thatprolonged flowering and boll formation period was longer in early maturing accessions than the late maturing variety, Suvin. The germplasm lines viz., ICB-28, ICB-174, EC-22, NDGB-1, NDGB-2NDGB-26, NDGB-32, NDGB-36and NDGB-61 are early maturing accessionidentified from the germplasm and their maturity period ranged from 151 to 165 days against 210 days in Suvin. These accessions produced more number of flowers in the peakflowering stage. However, mature bolls plant' were low due to higher shedding percentages. Maximumflowering of 72.6 % was observed in Recessions namely EC-22, NDGB-61 and ICB-174 from second to fourth week of October, while most of the others completed their maximum flowering in the first to second week of October. The maximum boll formation was noticed in EC-22, ICB-174 and NDGB-61 from 19th to 26th October. Though all the nine accessions are early maturing, only five genotypes have been identified as high yielding types and the yield variedfrom 7.3 q ha~(-1) to 9.7 q ha~(-1). The information onflowering andfruiting behaviour of G.barbadense accessions are highly helpful for the effective utilization of germplasm in the breeding programmes and subsequent identification of progenies for desired characters. The accession EC-22, NDGB-61, ICB-174 and ICB-28 were identified as early maturing accession with desirable yield potential, minimal square shedding and maximum boll retention ability as compared to other germplasm lines under Coimbatore weather conditions of Tamil Nadu.
