The present study was conducted to asses the effect of sex on carcass quality parameters and proximate composition of dual purpose Vanaraja chicken. Ten female and ten male Vanaraja birds of over 72 weeks of age were slaughtered by ritual Halal method. The birds were bled, plucked, eviscerated and later weighed to determine different slaughter and carcass characteristics. The cut up parts viz. breast, thighs and drumsticks were further analyzed for proximate analysis. The mean values (male/female) ofslaughter characteristics and yields indicated that male Vanaraja birds had significantly (P<0.05) higher live (2999/1891 g), pre-slaughter (2952/1842 g), defeathered (2653/1704 g), dressed (2061.7/1162.5 g) and ready-to-cook (2188.3/1229.2 g) weights compared to the female Vanaraja birds. The dressing percentage of Vanaraja males (70.71%) was also significantly (P<0.05) higher than Vanaraja females (65.21%). The mean values (male/female) of all carcass cuts of male Vanaraja chicken viz. neck, wings, legs, back and breast were significantly (P<0.05) higher than female counterparts. With regard to yield characteristics of giblets and other main by-products of Vanaraja chicken, the results were significant (P<0.05) with respect to heart weight, gizzardweight, liver weight and giblet weight, the values being significantly (P<0.05) higher in males. Proximate parameters of various carcass cuts of the two sexes were comparable to each other indicating both female and male Vanaraja birds at over 72 weeks of age have suitable carcass characteristics.
