The field of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has seen some dramatic developments over the past decade or so. Perhaps the two most important of these are the development of hardware correctors for the inherent spherical aberration of electron lenses, and the development of monochromators to reduce the inherent energy spread of the electron beam. The UK has managed to stay at the forefront of these developments, in particular because of the establishment of the UK's only national electron microscopy facility in the physical sciences: the SuperSTEM Laboratory at Daresbury. Here I will explain the importance of these developments, describe how the SuperSTEM laboratory came about and describe the latest instrument that has just been launched at the laboratory.
