摘要

The spider fauna of The Gambia is diverse, as is to be expected of a tropical West African country. Besides the recent publication of Penney (2009), which includes photographic documentation of more than 100 spider species in 34 families (in additionto eight other arachnid orders) there is barely any information available on this fauna (see distribution and natural history data in Dippenaar-Schoeman & Jocque (1997). Even for other West African countries where spider biodiversity is better understood, most of this information is derived from collections-based taxonomic studies and little is known about the ecology and behaviour of many groups.
