Stories of animal abuse and neglect appearing in the news often result in a public outcry and a significant number of letters being written to governments, denouncing the acts and demanding more effective deterrents and punishments. In a recent issue of The Canadian Veterinary Journal (CVJ), the question “Is it appropriate in suspected cruelty cases for veterinarians to insist on reporting to a veterinarian rather than to a lay inspector?” was asked. The question was in relation to pending provincial legislation requiring veterinarians to report suspected breaches of enforceable laws related to animal care.
