The issue of the food and beverage industries'culpability (or not) for the epidemic of overweight and obesity grabbed headlines in America again last month. First the industry went into shock when Tommy Thompson, the plain-spoken U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, made aggressive new comments about the obesity problem that seemed to amount to a threat against the U.S. food industry (see page 17). And then a public-interest lawyer singled out trans fats for a new lawsuit. The lawsuit may have been withdrawn, but it's given other anti-fat lawyers a new idea that may yet bring more food companies into court.
