The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing "when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life." While food insecurity is a global issue, this article will primarilyfocus on the situation in the United States and the role of food buying clubs in helping to address it.In 2010, about 85.5 percent of households were food secure, 9.1 percent had low food security and 5.4 percent had very low food security, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This equates to 48.8 million households that were food insecure in 2010.
