摘要

The main challenge that Africa and members of the African Seed Trade Association face is also their greatest opportunity - competing in an open global economy armed with assets, such as products derived from biotechnology. This was one of the key points that John Kilama, CEO of the Global BioDiversity Institute (GBDI). Newark, Delaware, recently made at the second annual meeting of the African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA) in Dakar, Senegal. Biotechnology must be viewed in light of how it can create jobs and new economic opportunities rather than simply feeding a starving population, stresses Kilama. Biotechnology will dramatically change economics worldwide and Africa must play a part in it, he says. Moreover, advances in bioinformatics will alsocreate entirely new opportunities in biotech-opportunities that one cannot yet even imagine, Kilama suggests. Eventually, there will be much more than food products derived from biotechnology and industry needs to focus on this, he says.
