Despite tremendous improvements in forecasting and warning systems to alert the public about tornado dangers, in the United States, about 70 people are still killed and about $3 billion of damage is incurred each year from these powerful storms(National Climatic Data Center 2013; Simmons, Sutter, and Pielke 2013). In this activity, students work with authentic data used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) to help determine the significance of developing prediction systems for tornadoes.
