EFFECT OF SODIUM IN BRIDGMAN-GROWN CuInSe_2

Bridgman ingots were grown with melt compositions of CuInSe_2 (stoichiometric) and CuInSe_(2.2)(excess Se), plus 0 to 3 at. % additions of Na_2Se. The resulting ingots were basically p-type, with a decrease in solidcohesiveness with increased sodium addition. Within most of the containing quartz ampoules, a white powder wasdeposited, consisting mainly of silica and carbon, along with Na, In and Cu. A small amount of Cu_3Se_2 was alsodetected by XRD in grayish spots deposited within the ampoule. No Na was detected by XRD of a powdered sampleof an ingot with a 3 at. % Na_2Se addition. Observed also within the ampoule and on the ingot surface was a reddishfilm, yet to be analyzed but suspected to be copper. Measurements of thermoelectric power were made on wafers cutfrom the ingots, which indicated a two order of magnitude increase in hole concentration in the excess Se materialwith increase of Na_2Se addition but a smaller increase for the stoichiometrically prepared material.
