摘要

Cyanobacteria are gram-negative and photosynthetic microorganisms present in terrestrial and aquatic environments, even in those with extreme conditions. However, most of them inhabit continental water bodies which include drinking water supplies where they are present as phytoplankton components. Frequently, under favorable environmental conditions, these organisms form blooms which turn the water green and with unpleasant odor and taste. This ability combined with that of producing highly toxic secondary metabolites makes the cyanobacteria responsible for acute poisoning in animals and humans and also for promoting cancer and neuro-degenerative disease (Nishiwaki-Matsushima et al. 1992; Azevedo et al. 2002; Murch et al. 2004).
