The Quantity of Unique Information in Student Ratings of Instruction

Considerable research has been conducted on the use of student ratings of instruction (SROIs) to measure, assess, and enhance teaching effectiveness (P. Gravestock and E. Gregor-Greenleaf, Student Course Evaluations: Research, Models and Trends, 2008). A major strand in the SROI literature focuses on their validity and reliability (L. Aleamoni, Journal of Personnel Evaluation in Education, 1999). This assures the quality of the information garnered about teaching effectiveness, but assumes that SROI items contain at least some positive quantity of information. Based on recent developments in the entropy literature, this paper focuses on establishing the quantity of information in SROIs using an entropy measure that places limited prior information on survey items or the data generation process (F. Dahl and N. Osteras, Entropy, 2010).
