Environmental Consulting Fundamentals by Benjamin Alter (2012) provides an overview of the typical activities of an environmental consultant, and is essentially an organized compilation of materials developed for a related course Alter taught for 10 years. The first section, Environmental Consulting: A Perspective, includes two chapters that provide a general introduction to the role and typical services provided by a consultant, a summary of the history and features of the most important environmental regulations (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act [RCRA], Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act [CERCLA], Clean Water Act [CWA], etc.), and an overview of typical environmental hazards and client types. This section provides an adequate introduction and orientation, but several market sectors are missed (e.g., mining, upstream oil and gas, brownfields) and other important non-Federal regulations are not discussed (e.g., state underground storage tank [UST] programs and voluntary cleanup programs).
