Techniques for capsule polishing have had varying levels of success. The Dewey Radius Tip (Microsurgical Technology, Redmond, Wash) is a highly polished, fully rounded phaco needle design lacking sharp edges and is capable of removing cataracts of any density. The rounded needle allows the use of low levels of ultrasound to safely polish the posterior capsule and decrease the visual impact of this residual material. Eleven patients with significant posterior subcapsular plaques were identified, and these plaques were polished with this technique. Ten had complete or nearly complete clearing of these plaques. No patient developed intraoperative or postoperative complications related to the technique. Although further study is warranted, early testing suggests this technique to be a safe method for reducing the impact of residual capsule opacification. 2006 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Inc.
