Equipment and services representing state-of-the-art technology and efficiency were demonstrated at the 2013 International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta during the last week of January. The US egg equipment manufacturers of cages and graders exhibit at the IPPE on odd-numbered years and accordingly the latest event attracted representatives from all segments of the industry. Since the IPE is international in scope, manufacturers from Europe and Asia joined their Western Hemispherecounterparts to display a broad range of cages, grading and packing installations and further-processing equipment. The major drivers of the design of equipment include: Welfare which dictates the selection of enriched cage modules, reducing feed costs which requires extreme efficiency to obviate wastage, environmental concerns relating to handling and disposal of manure and the need to conserve energy is observed in LED illumination and more efficient ventilation systems for high density. The annual IPPE provides a valuable opportunity to review new products and innovations which contribute to enhanced productivity. Interaction with informed colleagues and representatives of exhibitors adds to knowledge and establishes contacts which are ultimately beneficial in conceptual planning, execution of projects and upgrading existing operations.
