摘要

What is this review about? Effectiveness of social skills groups for improving core social and associated symptoms in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders. What are the findings? Social skills group training improves measures of social competence and friendship quality for some children with ASD and average or above average intelligence. Available evidence demonstrates no or inconsistent effect on other outcome measures (e.g. social communication, emotional recognition and quality-of-life measures). No adverse effects were reported. What are the findings based on? Five randomised trials from the USA comparing social skills group participants (n = 196) with wait-list controls on standardised measures of social competence, social communication, quality of life, emotion recognition and other specific behaviours. Social skills group participants were children and young adults aged 6-21 years with ASD diagnosed on DSM-IV-TR or ICD-10 criteria and average or above average IQ on standardised measures. Limited information was available on co-morbidities or medication usage but there was variation between studies (Table 1). Social skills group interventions were defined broadly as those delivered by professional personnel with groups of at least two individuals with ASD and sessions of any frequency or duration in any setting. Four studies assessed treatment fidelity. Four of five included studies were structured as single, 60-90-min sessions every week. However, studies varied in duration (5-20 weeks or 12-125 sessions) and curricula used. Four of five studies also included concurrent parent training as part of the overall intervention. Four studies which measured social competence using standardised measures (e.g. Social Skills Rating System, Social Responsiveness Scale, Social Competence Inventory) were included in the meta-analysis.
