10.1 Introduction Neural development is characterised by several periods that occur in a precise sequence. During early stages, intrinsic genetic programmes drive neurogenesis, axonal outgrowth and initial connectivity. At later stages, neuronal activity induces activity-dependent anatomical and molecular changes; these changes are the basis for the refinement of neural circuits. The correct temporal sequence of all these events is essential to obtain a properly functioning brain.
