Coal, limestone, clay, sand and gravel are mined in Kentucky. Kentucky has been one of the top three coal-producing states in the nation for more than 50 years. Coal is primarily used by electric power plants and industrial markets. Pennsylvanian bituminous coal is mined in the western and eastern parts of the state. The Western Kentucky coalfield is part of the Illinois Basin, or Eastern Interior. The Eastern Kentucky coalfield is part of the Central Appalachian Basin. Coal is produced from more than 50 beds in both basins, including three of the top 10 producing coals in the nation. Those include the Springfield (Western Kentucky No. 9) in western Kentucky, the Upper Elkhorn No. 3 and the Hazard No. 4 (Fire Clay) in eastern Kentucky.
