Proteomic Profiling of Avian Innate Immune Cell Surface Proteins

The course of innate immune responses mounted by virally infected animals is critical to the outcome of infection. Aberrant responses can lead to increased disease as recently shown with respect to avian influenza infections in mammals. Our interest is in defining the molecular basis for innate immune cell interactions in the chicken, an important vector in human flu infections. While we have made some progress identifying potential receptors and ligands through homology searches using the gene sequences for natural killer (NK) cell receptors and ligands in other species, we are also developing proteomic methods to sample the cell surface of chicken cells exhibiting natural killing activity to directly identify the proteins expressed by these cells.
