While vehicular traffic [Category V] lighting is designed to meet the needs of vehicle drivers, pedestrian area [Category P] lighting on roads is generally designed for pedestrians. In fact, the relevant Australian Standard assumes in most instances that the illumination required by vehicle drivers is provided by the vehicle headlights. Although nominally for road lighting, the Standard covers pedestrian lighting in detail including virtually all outdoor pedestrian areas such as outdoor car parks, pathways in parks, outdoor malls and town squares. To assist road lighting specifiers and designers, particularly in the area of P category lighting four road lighting Standards are currently being revised.
